Opera Anywhere collaborates with choral societies, community choirs and orchestras across the UK
We’ve been touring opera productions across the UK for many years now but during the last 18 months we’ve been collaborating with several choral societies, community choirs, youth orchestras and operatic societies to bring together bigger and better productions to our audiences and offering unique opportunities for groups to work alongside professional opera performers.
Our touring plans for 2014 and 2015 include ‘The Mikado’ and ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ and at Christmas ‘Amahl & The Night Visitors’ by Menotti. We have enjoyed performing these productions with minimal casting in smaller intimate venues but our experience with the various collaborations to produce a much bigger production has worked well for all concerned.
We’ve performed with The Mikado at the Colston Hall in Bristol with the Gurt Lush Choir and Bristol Schools Philharmonia to an audience of 1500, we’ve performed The Pirates of Penzance with Crediton Operatic Society to an audience of 400 in an Air Hangar in Devon. We’ve combined with the Letcombe Regis singers to perform The Mikado in a cow shed in the Oxfordshire village of Marcham.
If your organisation is a choir or an orchestra and would like to partner us in a combined performance we would love to discuss the possibilities. We invite choirs to provide us with the chorus, dependent on rehearsal time available the chorus could be ‘off the book’ and be integrated with the production on stage. For choirs with a busy schedule we’d be very happy for them to perform with the score off stage or behind the main action. We generally suggest that the choir or orchestra arrives rehearsed on the performance day in the early afternoon for one joint rehearsal prior to an evening performance, this has worked well for us in the past.
We have a number of financial arrangements in place, we can offer percentage splits in ticket sales and this will vary on which party take the risk, who takes responsibility for the venue, the marketing and ticket selling. Sometimes we can pay a fixed fee to cover the costs of the choir or orchestra and sometimes we get paid a fixed fee, we are flexible and can fit into most scenarios.
