Breaking the cycle of poverty in just one generation!
Can you imagine what it is like to live with your 8 children in just two small rooms, to earn your living selling fish from a roadside stall, and hoping that you will be able to send all of the children to school so that they don’t have to live like this?
This is the experience for many women in Uganda. They are very often left to support their children alone.
Schooling is not free in Uganda. In large and complex families with limited resources the girls may not be able to go to school. Boys are given priority over girls because they are regarded as future providers, whilst the girls will get married. The reality can be very different.
Education improves access to employment and gives the girls the chance of a more secure future for themselves and their children.
Tinah’s school fees were paid for two years – a total of £400. She has gone on to become a nurse and is now training the next generation of nurses. More than this, she has built her mother a home and has paid forward the school fees that she received to a number of members of her family.
Most important of all, Tinah says “Because of a bursary, my children will never know the poverty that I grew up with.”
Gift of a Future is changing the lives of girls like Tinah, and her family, in just one generation.
