Opera Anywhere’s journey with Menotti began in 2002 with a captivating rendition of ‘Amahl & The Night Visitors’, swiftly establishing itself as a beloved Opera Anywhere Christmas tradition. Since then, our stage has hosted numerous Menotti masterpieces, from the spine-tingling ‘The Medium’ at the atmospheric Oxford Castle to the uproarious ‘The Old Maid And The Thief’. Notably, we innovatively staged ‘The Telephone’ in a mobile phone shop, supported by Vodafone sponsorship, with a lively performance at their Cornmarket Street store in Oxford.
Synopsis
The Telephone, or L’Amour à Trois, shows Menotti’s sharp wit spotlighting just how intrusive the telephone was in 1940s America – a time when only half of households owned such a thing – and translates delightfully into the 21st century in the form of the mobile phone. The opera’s comic twists and turns allow everything from an exasperated aria to tender duets ensuring audiences are happily swept along in this hugely enjoyable caper.
Synopsis
Our latest venture takes on a fresh perspective under the astute direction of Freya Jacklin. Set within the bustling confines of a London train station café, the narrative unfolds around Lucy and Ben, a young professional couple arranging a hurried rendezvous before they both head back to their family homes for the Christmas holidays. However, amidst Ben’s impending proposal, the couple must grapple with Lucy’s incessant barrage of messages and calls on her mobile phone. In this oh-so-familiar battle in the modern age, who will be victorious? Ben… or the telephone?!
